JEFFERSON — Stanley E. Mericka, age 83, of Westview Dr., Jefferson, Ohio, died unexpectedly Saturday afternoon, Feb. 22, 2014, at his residence.

He was born Oct. 26, 1930, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Stanley J. and Frances A. (Hynst) Mericka. The family moved to New Lyme Township in 1946. He was a 1948 graduate of Deming High School and has resided in this area the past 68 years. Mr. Mericka was a Veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean Conflict. He was part of the Army Security Agency. He was married to Mable “Pat” Patterson on Oct. 29, 1955, at St. Joseph Calasanctius Church in Jefferson.

Mr. Mericka retired in 1996 from Rockwell International as a manufacturing engineer, starting many years earlier at Reliance Electric.

He was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Jefferson, Tuscan Lodge #342, F. & A. M., El Kadir Grotto in Ashtabula, VFW Post #3334, the Roadrunners Travel Club, and Happy Travelers Club.

He was a Boy Scout in his youth in Cleveland; he played basketball and softball in the Industrial and Jefferson leagues; and played against the Harlem Globetrotters in Japan in 1952. His past included being an Indian Guide and Cub Scout Leader, and being involved with Little League, Music Boosters, and the Girls Drill Team as his children were growing up.

His hobbies include traveling, bowling, golf, woodworking, fishing and making fishing lures.

Survivors include three daughters, Susan (Douglas) Hall of Glendale, Ariz., Karen (Paul) Quirke of Painesville and Laura (Timothy) Burke of Mentor-on-the-Lake; five grandchildren, Chad, Jerrud, Jake, Steven and Kelly; six great-grandchildren, Breanna, Collin, Alaina, Johnathan, Conan and Juliette; and a sister, Laverne Mitcham, and a brother, Roger (Barbara) Mericka, both of Jefferson.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Pat in 2008; a son, Jeffrey in 1968; his father, Stanley in 1985; and mother, Frances in 2006.

Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, March 1st, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 41 E. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with the Rev. James Brehler officiating. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery. Geneva Post #6846 of the VFW will provide Military Honors.

Calling Hours will be held Friday, Feb. 28th, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Jefferson Home of FLEMING & BILLMAN FUNERAL DIRECTORS & CREMATORY, INC., 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson and Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Church.
