SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP — Carol Joyce Hietanen, age 65, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, at her home.
The daughter of August and Molly (Pizzuto) Hietanen, she was born on Dec. 23, 1948, in Ashtabula. Carol remained a lifelong area resident.
A graduate of Ashtabula High School, she went on to further her education at Kent State University receiving her Bachelor of Science in Education.
For nearly thirty years Carol enriched the lives of many young people as a first and second grade teacher at Saybrook Elementary School. Carol loved to teach, and being a “kid at heart” helped her to be a better teacher.
A superb baker, she was reknown for her pies, cookies and pecan tarts. She was the family photographer at all the gatherings, taking the most beautiful pictures and creating the most beautiful memories. Everyone loved to be around Carol.
She was soft spoken, yet strong; and loved to travel with her friends to many interesting destinations. She and her fellow retired teachers enjoyed their monthly luncheons, catching up on each other’s lives. She and her sister Jean enjoyed their Friday lunches and their time together. They are the best of friends.
Her loyalty and devotion to her friends and family were unmatched. She would always be there for you without hesitation. She will be remembered for her strength and dignity, grace and faithfulness.
Carol is survived by her sister, Jean (John) “Jiggs” Spencer of Kingsville; her niece, Pamela (Bob Wilson) Spencer of Fayetteville, Ohio; nephews, Kevin Todd (Vera) Hietanen of Knoxville, Tenn. and Eric Spencer of Ashtabula; special niece-in-law, Becky Spencer; great-niece, Katie; and great-nephew Brett; and her special friends, Sharon, Judy, Diane and Doris.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Leonard ”Lenny” Hietanen.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated 11 a.m., Monday, Feb. 3rd, at Our Lady of Peace Parish, St. Joseph Church, 3330 Lake Ave., Ashtabula, Ohio. The Rev. Raymond Thomas will preside. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.
A Calling Hour will be observed from 10 until time of Service, Monday, at St. Joseph Church.
