ASHTABULA — Lifelong Ashtabula resident, Dan P. DiDonato, age 91, passed away peacefully Thursday Jan. 30, 2014, at his home.

He was born in Ashtabula on Aug. 5, 1922, the devoted son of Carl and Esther (Fuschino) DiDonato. He was a 1941 graduate of Ashtabula High School.

In December of 1942, he was inducted into the U.S. Army. On June 2, 1943, in New Orleans, he married Ruth M. Beckman, his loving and devoted wife of the past 70 years. Two months after his marriage he was deployed to Europe where he was stationed for over 2 years until his honorable discharge in December of 1945.

Dan worked as a car inspector on the railroad for over 40 years until his retirement from Conrail in 1982.

For Dan, his family was his life. He made spaghetti dinners every Sunday for the past 70 years; and could never spend enough time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. But the person he enjoyed spending time with the most was his loving wife, Ruth, of over 70 years. Lovingly known as “Papa D” he never missed one of his grandkids functions or sporting events. He enjoyed wine making, gardening, gambling, and all kinds of music. He will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth; daughter, Janice (Terry) Miggo; son, Dan (Liz) DiDonato; grandchildren, Dylann (Claudia) DeAnna, Jason (Dina) DiDonato, Aaron (Anna) DeAnna, Danielle (Larry) Fowler, Dustin DiDonato and Cory DiDonato; and his great-grandchildren, Sean, Jessie, Emily, Alex, Angelina, MaiChun and Maikhil; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John, Joseph, Anthony and Carl DiDonato; and his sister, Caroline Millick.

Calling Hours will be held on Saturday, Feb. 1st, from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., at POTTI FUNERAL HOME, 1329 Lake Ave., Ashtabula. Funeral Services will begin at 12 Noon, with Fr. Ernesto Rodriguez officiating. Burial with Full Military Honors will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.
