ASHTABULA — Helen Mary Jammal, age 86, passed away on Friday, Jan. 17, 2014, at her home with her family by her side, minutes after the one year anniversary of the passing of her husband, Joe.

Helen was born Sept. 12, 1927, in Trenton, N.J., the daughter of Walter and Mary (Marczak) Kateusz. Helen attended Trenton High School where she first met her future husband, Joseph N. Jammal. On April 14, 1951, she married Joe and together they celebrated sixty-one years of marriage.

Mrs. Jammal earned her degree in Nursing from the Hahnemann University Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia. After several years working as an RN, she became a  devoted mother raising her children in the lively family neighborhood of Arlington Drive.

She was a member of Our Lady of Peace Parish Mother of Sorrows Church, Women’s Service League, and the Ashtabula Country Club and was a Cub Scout Leader. Helen was a  ballet dancer in her younger years and performed in the Green Door Follies. She enjoyed playing golf and doubles tennis with her girlfriends. Traveling, Nordic skiing, and attending the orchestra and theater with her husband Joe were some of her favorite pastimes.

Helen will always be remembered for her kindness and compassion for others, and her devotion to her family, especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by two sons, Nicholas J. (Lisa) Jammal of Ashtabula and Christopher W. (Patricia) Jammal of Lakewood; five grandchildren, Joseph, Sarah, Samantha, Matthew and Thomas Jammal; and one sister, Constance “Connie” Komuves of Highland Village, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Nicholas Jammal on Jan. 16, 2013; two brothers, Joseph and Stephen Kaytus; one sister, Florence Crosby; and her parents.

Calling Hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m., Monday, Jan. 20th, at ZABACK-WILLIAMS-DUCRO FUNERAL HOME, 500 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 21st, at Our Lady of Peace Parish, Mother of Sorrows Church, 1464 W. 6th St., Ashtabula. The Rev. Ernesto Rodriguez will preside. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.
