ASHTABULA — Bernetta Jean Goodwin, age 75, of Lake Ave., passed away Saturday, July 5, 2014, in the Hospice Unit of Ashtabula County Medical Center.
She was born Sept. 3, 1938, in Selma, Ala., the daughter of Vernon Bell and Onzie Cooper and had been an Ashtabula resident since she was 15 years old.
Prior to her retirement, she worked 12 years as a dietician at the Ashtabula County Medical Center. Bernetta was strong of faith and belonged to New Hope COGIC.
She loved roses and was a wonderful cook, making many things from scratch and rarely needing a recipe. She enjoyed playing cards, baking, and being with her grandchildren whom she babysat for all the time. A true cheerleader for her children, she was always there to entertain her family and friends.
Her survivors include eight children, Lillie Crockett of Ashtabula, C. Diane (Theopolis) Taylor of Blysville, Ark., Anthony (LoAmmi) Goodwin of Richmond, Va., Stephen Goodwin of Ashtabula, Melenee West of Snellville, Ga., and Yvette (Roy) Barnes, Brian (Rochelle) Goodwin, and Eric (Madeline) Goodwin, all of Ashtabula; step-son, James Turner of Columbus; a very special cousin whom she considered a daughter, Regina (Harvey) Wells of Akron; 21 grandchildren, James III, Kenji, Dexter, Makeba, Tonya, Calvin, Kendis, Kayla, Kevin, Ashley, Anthony, Aydin, Joanna, Hope, Kenisha, Mya, Kortny, Devon, Kierra, Kiylee, and KaDrea; 17 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Vivian Leache of Alliance and Carolyn Cooper and Helen Cooper, both of Selma, Ala.; two brothers, Chester Cooper of Selma, Ala. and Solomon (Pauline) Cooper of Warrensville Heights; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James “Sonny” Goodwin; one son, James Goodwin; one grandson, Kenneth Williams; one great-grandchild, Nathan Felder; a son-in-law, Ellis Crockett; sister, Jessie Mae Struthers; brother, Edward Cooper; and her parents.
A Calling Hour will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., with a Service to follow at 11 a.m., on Saturday, July 12th, at Peoples Missionary Baptist Church, 3837 West Ave., Ashtabula. The Rev. Dr. German Womack, Pastor, will officiate with Elder Emory Moore, of New Hope COGIC, delivering the eulogy. Burial will be in Saybrook Cemetery.
