CONNEAUT — Louis J. DiNunzio Sr., age 93, of Conneaut, died early Friday, July 19, 2013, at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home.

Louie was born on March 26, 1920, in Conneaut, the son of Pasquale and Anna Mucci DiNunzio. He grew up in Conneaut and attended Conneaut City Schools. As a young man, Louis joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and was stationed in the Cleveland area. During World War II, he proudly enlisted in the United States Navy, where he fought in the Pacific Theater of Operations. After his Honorable discharge from the United States Navy as a Ship fitter 2nd Class USNR, in 1946, Louis met Flora Turk, whom he married on Oct. 23, 1948, at St. Mary Church in Conneaut.

His work career included the Nickel Plate Railroad, Allied Resinous and he retired at the age of 70 from Premix Corporation in Kingsville. Due to the “steam-engine” locomotive experience he gained while working at the Nickel Plate Railroad, Louis was recruited to work on the 1975-1976 American Freedom Train that toured the country for the Unites States Bicentennial Celebration.

Louie loved to help people and also taking care of his yard and family. Working was a hobby for Louie.

 Louie was a member of St. Mary/St. Frances Cabrini Parish and was one of the original volunteers who helped build Mother Cabrini Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Ida Aremini, Helen Bohack, Josephine Marcucci and Mary Calabrese; and his brother, Nick DiNunzio.

He is survived by his wife, Flora (Turk) DiNunzio; daughter, Louise (DiNunzio) Gustafson and her husband, Denny of Conneaut; son, Louis DiNunzio Jr. and his wife, Rosemarie Vernon of Newton, N.C.; his grandchildren, Vicki (Gustafson) Portzer and her husband, Darryl of Conneaut, Danielle (Gustafson) Galantis and her husband, Nick of Campbell, Ohio, Denny Gustafson Jr. of Conneaut, Louis DiNunzio III of Philadelphia, Pa. and Caraline DiNunzio, currently on Peace Corp. assignment in Paraguay; five great-grandchildren, Cassandra and Hannah Portzer, Alexandra and Nicole Galantis and Arabella Gustafson; his brother, Tony DiNunzio of Conneaut; and his sisters, Patricia Adams and Florence Jabailey, both of Conneaut.

Calling Hours will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., Tuesday July 23rd, at RAISIAN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 581 Harbor St., Conneaut.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 Noon, Tuesday, July 23rd, at St. Frances Cabrini Church, 744 Mill St., with Fr. Philip Miller officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Conneaut, with the American Legion Honor Squad presenting Military Rites.
