ASHTABULA — Thomas Joseph Hassett, age 79, of Ashtabula, passed away Saturday, July 13, 2013, at Ashtabula County Medical Center.
Born Nov. 23, 1934, in Ashtabula, Ohio, the son of the late John Hassett. Thomas attended Mother of Sorrows Elementary School, and graduated from Harbor High School and the Ohio State Technical College. After High School, Tom enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the division of military police.
Thomas worked for over 30 years as a mechanic for the Conrail Lower Lake Dock. He enjoyed public office where he served on Ashtabula Council for over 20 years, as Ward 1 councilman, Vice President of Council, and also President of City Council.
Mr. Hassett was an active member of the American Legion, VFW, Elk’s Lodge, Moose Lodge, and the National Rifle Association.
He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Shirley Hassett of Ashtabula; his children, Gabriella Hassett-Vendetti, and her husband Richard of Ashtabula; son, Thomas John Hassett, and his wife Sheri Smith-Hassett of Belleview, Ill.; grandchildren, Richard Thomas Vendetti of Jacksonville, Fla. and Caroleina Marie Hassett of Belleview, Ill.; brothers, Joe Pat Hassett and Jim Hassett; sisters, Bunny Zigmont, Betty Meaney and Norma Hassett; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Thomas was preceded in death by his loving wife of 30 years, Caroline Hassett (nee Labry); his father, John Hassett; brothers, Michael and Jack Hassett; and sisters, Sharon Hassett and Patricia Baily.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 16th, at Our Lady of Peace, Mother of Sorrows Worship Site, with Military Honors conducted by the American Legion Post #103. Inurnment will be at St. Joseph Cemetery at a later date.
Calling Hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Today, July 15th, at ZABACK-WILLIAMS-DUCRO FUNERAL HOME, 500 W. Prospect Ave., Ashtabula.
