ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP — Margaret Ann “Peg” Burks, age 83, passed away Friday, July 12, 2013, at the Ashtabula County Medical Center.
She was born May 16, 1930, in Hillsdale, Ind., the daughter of Bennie and Marietta (Burns) Brower and had been an Ashtabula resident since 1957.
Prior to her retirement in 1984, she worked as bookkeeper and office/personnel manager for the Jupiter store in the Ashtabula Plaza.
A devoted member of the Saybrook Grange for many years, she served as their secretary, as well as the secretary for the Ashtabula County Pomona Grange. She organized the Saybrook Grange Annual Chinese Auction for 15 years until 2009.
She enjoyed her monthly outings and other activities with the Red Hat Flappers. She also loved gardening and flowers, as well as sewing and participating in craft shows.
Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Lee Burks, whom she married July 7, 1946, shortly after Lee’s return from the Navy following World War II; four children, Steven L. (Ginny) Burks of Royal Oak, Mich., Cyndy A. Burks (Pal/Helton) of Mesa, Ariz., and Marla K. Burks and Kelsey L. Burks, both of Ashtabula; five grandchildren, Robert, Craig (Tracy) and Matthew Burks, Scott (Marcia) Pal and Julie (Brian) Mowka; five great-grandchildren, Kyra Burks and Maelynn Burks, Quenten and Colten Pal and Kyle Mowka; and one sister, Virginia Overpeck of Rockville, Ind.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Benjamin, Robert and Richard Brower; two sisters, Rosemary and Barbara Jean Brower; and her parents.
Calling Hours will be held on Monday, July 15th, at the ZABACK-WILLIAMS-DUCRO FUNERAL HOME, 500 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula, Ohio, from 11 a.m. until the hour of Service at 1 p.m. The service will open with a Grange Memorial Service at 1 p.m. followed by Kathleen Shaffer, Certified Celebrant, officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery, North Kingsville, Ohio.
