CHARDON — Elmer E. Herman, age 78, of Jefferson, Ohio, died Sunday, July 28, 2013, at UH-Geauga Regional Medical Center.

Born July 29, 1934, in Woodcock Township, Pa., to Emmit and Bessie (née: Whitely) Herman, he had been a resident of Austinburg, Ohio, before moving to Myrtle Beach, Fla., 10 years ago.

He was a retired machinist with RMI in Ashtabula.

Elmer enjoyed fishing, spending time at the beach, and watching NASCAR and stock car races. Along with his sons, he built and raced stock cars at Sharon and Raceway 7.

Elmer is survived by his sons, Elmer (Rose) and James (Barb Saltz), both of Jefferson; daughter, Darla (Richard) Ales of Solon; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brothers, Donald and Norm (Sarah); sister, Marjorie Carraher; and many cousins and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Alice Carraher.

At Elmer’s request, private family services were held.
