Mamie Gillespie

ASHTABULA — Mamie Gillespie, age 90, of 48th St., passed away Sunday, Dec. 23, 2012, with her family by her side.

The daughter of George A. and Minnie C. (Cook) Riedel, she was born June 25, 1922, in Austinburg and had been a lifelong area resident, graduating from Austinburg High School in 1941.

A Veteran of the United States Navy, she served during WW II before being honorably discharged. Mamie was proud of her service to her country and was a past member of the VFW Post #943 Ladies Auxiliary. She worked at the Stow-a-way Restaurant in Carlisle’s and later Industrial Rayon before her career as a long distance operator with The Western Reserve Telephone Company (later Alltel) from where she retired.

A true animal lover, Mamie also loved to dance polkas, play bingo and the slots, and cheer for her beloved Cleveland Indians and Cavs. But truly, her family was the most important part of her life.

She is survived by her daughters, June (David) Wagner of Geneva and Sharon Surbella of Ashtabula; three grandchildren, Tommy (Maureen Novak) Surbella, Lisa (Kerry) Bowers and Kristie (Roger) Lamb; five great-grandchildren, Meghan, Devon, Mya, Brooklyn and Paige; her former son-in-law, Thomas Surbella; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Carey Wagner; four brothers, Merle, Morton, Morris and Martin Riedel; three sisters, Mildred Schair, Mary Sage and Marcella Delauter; her honorary son-in-law, Jim Coffman; and her parents.

Funeral Services will be held 12 Noon, Thursday, Dec. 27th, at DUCRO FUNERAL SERVICES AND CREMATORY, 4524 Elm Ave., Ashtabula. Sister Laurie Divoky, Spiritual Care Coordinator for Hospice of the Western Reserve, will preside. Burial will be in the Garden of Honor at Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville, with Military Honors to be provided by American Legion, Dewey-Howlett Post #103.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until time of Service, Thursday, Dec. 27th, at the Funeral Home.

If desired, memorial contributions in Mamie’s name may be made to Hospice of the Western Reserve or to the Animal Protective League.
