ERIE, Pa. — DeStewart E. Gruey, age 96, of Conneaut, Ohio, died Friday morning, June 7, 2013, at UPMC Hamot Medical Center in Erie, Pa.

Born August 27, 1916, in Conneaut, he was the son of Delano and Mae (Jones) Gruey. He was a 1933 graduate of Conneaut High School where he was proud to be a trumpet player in the first Conneaut High School Marching Band.

A Veteran, Mr. Gruey served with the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, and was employed at J.C. Penney Co., the Nickel Plate Railroad, the Community News, and at the Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad, retiring in 1976.

He was a member of Cowle Post #151 of the American Legion, the Elks Lodge, the Conneaut Area Historical Society, and the Conneaut Railroad Museum. He enjoyed golfing and bowling, and in his earlier years, gardening and traveling.

Survivors include three daughters, Dee Marie (Charles) Rutherford of Conneaut, Ohio, Patricia (Ray) Hansen and Diana Theiss, both of Sun City, Ariz.; his son, Carl (Diane) Gruey of Kingsville, Ohio; his step-son, Robert (Marilyn) Gross of Conneaut, Ohio; his sister, Maralee Gruey of Alliance, Ohio; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and one niece.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marion; two brothers, Carl and Jack Gruey; three sisters, Ida Grice, Mae Gruey, and Marguerite Graff; and two grandsons.

Calling Hours will be on Tuesday, June 11th, from 2 to 4 p.m., at the MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, with Military Honors provided by Cowle Post #151 of the American Legion.

Immediately following the Military Honors, a Celebration Gathering will take place across the street at the Marcy Family Center, 180 Harbor St., Conneaut.
