William Sweeney

ASHTABULA — On Sunday, July 21, 2013, William “Arnold” Sweeney lost his battle with cancer. With his sister Darlene and daughter Nikki at his side, he surrendered to the angels that came to escort him home to heaven.

The last words he heard were “I love you Dad” whispered softly in his ear by his daughter as he went to greet his family in heaven. He was born in Ashtabula on August 3, 1961, to William “Jake” and Gladys Sweeney and was a lifelong resident.

He attended Jefferson High School and worked as a laborer in several factories in Ashtabula. He served in the U.S. Army and was a specialist in communications. William had the highest regards for the military and anyone who served.

His favorite pastimes were playing the guitar, cooking out on his grill and spending time with his family; but his greatest joy was his grandchildren. He loved nothing better than playing with his grandkids.

Those he left behind are his daughters, Victoria “Nikki” Sweeney of Ashtabula and Karianne Sweeney of South Carolina; a son, Joshua Sweeney of Ashtabula; adopted parents, Linda Hughart of Jefferson and Keith Hopkins of Middlefield; sister, Darlene Sweeney of Ashtabula; adopted brothers, Jephtha Hopkins of Jefferson, Brett (Tracie) Hopkins of South Carolina and Matt (Holly) Hopkins of Canton; grandchildren, Savannah, Jerron and Jacob of Ashtabula and Kyle, Deborah, Riley and Khloe of South Carolina; aunts, Debra (Curtiss) Richards of Dorset and Alma Crow of Jefferson; an uncle, Douglas (Cindy) Atwell of Ashtabula; and several nieces and nephews.

Those he joined in heaven are his parents, Jake and Gladys Sweeney; grandparents, Charlie and Lucelia Atwell and Luther and Belle Sweeney; sister, Anita Pratt; brother, Charles Sweeney; infant niece, Jennifer Pratt; nephew, Joseph Sweeney; and several aunts and uncles.

Graveside Services with Full Military Honors will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, July 31st, at Oakdale Cemetery, Jefferson, with the Rev. Connie Pelton officiating.

The family of William Sweeney would like to say a special thank you to William’s hospice nurse, Amy Beach, for the excellent care and the kindness and compassion that she gave to him on his last days with us. And thank you to the team at Hospice of the Western Reserve for all your help. To the Cleveland Browns, William will be cheering you on from heaven.
