Betty Virginia (Burroughs) Smiley, age 95, passed away after a brief illness on Tuesday, April 1, 2014, in Ashtabula.
She was born on Dec. 6, 1918 and lived in Ashtabula her whole life. She was the daughter of Dr. Shepard H. and Elizabeth Burroughs. Betty was the wife of prominent Ashtabula businessman Floyd Smiley, marrying him in 1941. She was the “baby sister” of siblings Sara Ellen Laughrey, Jean Fredrick, Dr. Shepard A. Burroughs, and Herbert Burroughs.
Betty was a 1936 graduate of Ashtabula High School. She attended Duke University and graduated from Ashtabula Business School. She worked at the Starkey Law firm as a book keeper until her marriage.
In 1954, Betty and Floyd built their dream house from the ground up at the former Burroughs Estate on Garrison Road. She enjoyed riding horses and breeding and showing championship German Shepherd dogs. She was founder of the Ashtabula Kennel Club. Betty raised three sons and supported them through many years of baseball, football, and basketball and attended nearly all their games. She was a devoted wife and loved canoeing, snowmobiling, and ball room dancing with her husband.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, mother, father, brothers and sisters, and granddaughter (Dani). She was the last remaining family member of her generation in the Burroughs family. Betty was married to Floyd for 66 years and lived in her dream home for over 60 years.
Her survivors include her three sons, Peter C. (Deanna) Smiley, Floyd “Duffy” (Diane) Smiley, and William Burroughs (Koreen) Smiley; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and seven nieces and nephews.
Services for family and friends will be a Graveside Service on Wednesday, April 30th, at 3 p.m., at Ridgeview Cemetery on Austinburg Road, Ashtabula.
