ASHTABULA — Doris Jeanette Taft (High) went to the arms of our Lord Saturday, April 13, 2013, after being hospitalized for over a month at the Ashtabula County Medical Center.

She was born March 4, 1933, to Erla I. and Howard C. High in Akron, Ohio. Doris graduated from Ashtabula High in 1951 and entered service in the United States Air Force. She left the USAF in 1954 to marry Donald E. Gammon and start a family. After several years the marriage ended and she and her children returned to Ohio.

Doris married Clifford A. Taft in 1972 and they spent 40 happy years together until his death in June of 2012. Theirs was a union of service to others. Doris served as a volunteer EMT/Paramedic in Jefferson, Ohio; was a member of the American Legion Post and Marine Corps League of Ashtabula, in addition to being supportive members of the Lyons and Eagles of Jefferson. Doris was also proud to serve as the Grand Chief of the Ohio Pythian Sisters carrying on a family tradition. Doris was a member of the Jefferson United Methodist Church.

Doris retired from Ashtabula County Medical Center as a Ward Clerk in the maternity section after spending several years working as a nurse’s aide.

Doris is survived by a daughter, Polly (Steve) Norberg of Howard, Ohio; sons, Mark Gammon of Newton Falls, Ohio and Rev. Gerald (Marian) Gammon of Warren, Ohio; son, Gary Taft of Phoenix, Ariz.; son, Dr. Steven Taft, PHD of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and daughter, Karen (James) Scott of Ashtabula, Ohio. Doris had several grand and great-grandchildren that shall cherish her memory. Doris is also survived by her brother, Clinton (Phyllis) High of New. Jersey; and her sister, Janet (Paul) Lehmann of Geneva, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents; an infant sister, Faith High; a brother, H. Bruce (Annabelle) High; her loving husband, Clifford; her eldest son, Donald E. Gammon Jr.; and grandchildren, Jason Gammon, Chrystyn O'Handley and Scott O'Handley.

Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 17th, at DUCRO FUNERAL SERVICES AND CREMATORY, 4524 Elm Ave., Ashtabula, with the Rev. Gerald Gammon officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memory Gardens in North Kingsville, Ohio with Full Military Honors provided by the American Legion Dewey Howlett Post #103, Ashtabula, Ohio.

Calling Hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday evening and on Wednesday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of Service.
