Francis DiPeitro

ASHTABULA — Francis “Ducky” DiPietro, age 79, of Ashtabula, Ohio, died on Monday evening, Nov. 5, 2012, at the Ashtabula County Medical Center.

Born Jan. 25, 1933, in Ashtabula, he was the son of Ben and Marie (Toth) DiPietro. For the past four years, he was a resident of the Villa at the Lake in Conneaut Ohio. He was a graduate of Ashtabula High School with the Class of 1950. While in School, he was a star athlete playing football and basketball. Ducky attended the University of Georgia on a football scholarship. He then was drafted by the U.S. Army serving at Ft. Belvoir Virginia, playing football. After the service, he was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers. He is a member of the Ashtabula County Football Hall of Fame.

Ducky was the owner of the “Spot Café” and had sponsored many softball teams. He was also a dedicated supporter of the St. John Herald football teams. On June 18, 1978, he was issued a proclamation from the City of Ashtabula for his contributions to athletics in the city and that week was named Francis “Ducky” DiPietro Week. After the closing of the Spot Restaurant, he worked at Griffiths Furniture Store.

Survivors include his sister, Palma and brother-in-law, Donald, Meola of Ashtabula; nephews, Donald Meola of Ashtabula, Tom (Renee) Meola of Ashtabula and Ben (Christina) Meola of Painesville; niece, Marianne Meola of Estero, Fla.; great-nieces, Krista (Joe) Toula, Jordan (Kevin) Rhinehart, and Shannon and Shelly Meola; great-nephews, Benjamin Nicholas and Joseph Meola; and aunt, Rose Demaline.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10th, at Our Lady of Peace Parish, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 2100 E. 21st St., Ashtabula. Military Honors will be provided by the American Legion Honor Guard Team from Post #103.

Visitation will be on Friday evening, Nov. 9th, from 5 to 7 p.m. at GUERRIERO FUNERAL HOME, 1550 W. 19th, St., Ashtabula.
