CLEARWATER, Fla. — Howard P. Cassidy, age 88, of Clearwater, Fla., passed away Thursday, May 23, 2013.
Howard was born July 8, 1924, in Astoria, N.Y., to parents Percy and Marian Cassidy. He graduated from Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in New York, N.Y. and graduated from Villanova University, Villanova, Pa. with a bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering.
Howard served in the 8th Air Force with the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII. He was the top turret gunner on a B-17 and flew 35 missions over occupied Europe during his military career, including 2 missions on D-Day. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, 4 Oak Leaf Clusters and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal.
Howard moved to Florida from Ohio in 1995. He was a parishioner of Light of Christ Catholic Church in Clearwater and formerly a parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ashtabula for 40 years. He also was a member of On Top of the World's Men's Golf League.
Howard is survived by his wife of 13 years, Patricia; children, Stephen, Gerard (Patrice), Patricia (Greg), Margaret (Phil), and Jeanne; 9 grandchildren, Jeff, Bryan, Drew, Katie, Jaclyn, Matthew, Sarah, Lauren and Ryan; and one great-grandson, Ashton.
He was preceded in death by his 1st wife, Loretta; and a son, Daniel.
Graveside Services will be held 10 a.m., Friday, May 31st, in the chapel at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.
