KINGSVILLE TOWNSHIP — Robert L. Lebzelter, age 84, died Sunday, Nov. 10, 2013, at the Ashtabula County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Born Nov. 26, 1928, in Johnstown, Pa., he was the son of Otto and Edith Lebzelter. He graduated from Ferndale High School in Johnstown in 1946 and then graduated from Otterbein College in Westerville with a degree in business administration. He did graduate work at Kent State University – Ashtabula, and obtained his masters of education from Edinboro University.
A Veteran, Bob served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a fifth-grade teacher at the former Lincoln Elementary School, beginning in 1956. He became principal and physical education teacher at Pierpont Elementary School in 1961. He became principal at the former North Kingsville Elementary School in 1967. He pulled double duty at both schools from 1982 to 1986, when he retired.
In a newspaper interview at his retirement, he said, “I have enjoyed my time. It was very rewarding. Not the money, but the things you see in children. The rewards are when you see our former students on the Dean's List and receiving awards in music and other achievements.”
He married the former Lois Kraus on June 7, 1952. After retirement, they enjoyed two decades wintering in Frostproof, Fla., where he and Lois both liked to golf. Bob and Lois first started playing golf at the old Conneaut Country Club, later Conneaut Shores, which abutted their back yard in North Conneaut. They later played at Village Green in North Kingsville and also spent many years camping at the adjoining Village Green Campgrounds.
He was a member of Lakeview United Methodist Church and later New Leaf United Methodist Church in Conneaut. He was on the board of trustees of Kingsville Public Library for many years. In retirement, he returned to North Kingsville school to help build the massive playground complex children still enjoy today. He also enjoyed taking care of his lawn.
Mr. Lebzelter was preceded in death by his parents, Edith in 1978 and Otto in 1983, and his wife in 2011.
He is survived by four sons, Robert (Louise) and Jeffrey, both of Conneaut, James (Eva) of Jefferson Township and Gary (Doris) of Painesville. He is also survived by grandchildren, Derek (Jessica) of North Kingsville, Megan, Rachel and Lauren, all of Conneaut, Timothy (Lawra) of Ashtabula and Robert Martin of Williamsfield Township; and a brother, David (Jane) of Northfield. Three great-grandsons also survive, Henry, Marcus and Benjamin Lebzelter of North Kingsville.
Service will be 11 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 14th, at THOMPSON-SMITH-NESBITT FUNERAL HOME, 345 Main St., Conneaut, Ohio.
Calling Hours are 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 13th, at the Funeral Home.
