Joseph J. Sholtis

ASHTABULA — Joseph John “Jack” The Mailman Sholtis passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012, after a long fight with COPD. He was 89 years old, born on Sept. 7, 1923, son of George Victor Sholtis and Mary (Gattorn) Sholtis.

He was a lifelong resident of Ashtabula and graduated from Ashtabula High School, Class of 1941. He served in the U.S. Army as a surgical technician  during World War II. After delivering mail to her parent’s home for a while and getting to know her, he married Mae Marie (Anderson) Sholtis in 1958, who still survives.

He also played the clarinet and saxophone, participating in many bands, including the U.S. Army and the Ashtabula Symphonic Orchestra Summer Concert Series at Kent State University-Ashtabula. He retired as a letter carrier of 42 years from the U.S. Postal Service, after which, he then worked for the Ashtabula Area City Schools System as a school crossing guard for 17 years from which he also retired.

Dad was loved by many and always knew someone everywhere he went. He’ll always be remembered for his sauce and lasagna. He loved spending time with his family and friends and his only hobby was “Coffee With the Guys.” One of his favorite things to do was making plans for his luncheons and Class of 1941 reunions.

He was a member of the VFW, American Legion and National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE). He also served as Secretary/Treasurer for the U.S. Postal Service’s National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) for many, many years.

He will simply be missed my many. Survivors include his wife, Mae Marie (Anderson) Sholtis; daughter, Sharon Sholtis; daughter, Jackie Sholtis and granddaughter, Jenna Harryman, all of Ashtabula; son, George Sholtis and his wife Kaye and grandchildren, Carly, Tate, Ava and Quinn of Ft. Loramie, Ohio; daughter, Jill (Sholtis) Fuller and her husband Chad and granddaughters, Juliana and Angelina of Ravenna, Ohio; his sister, Anne Marie (Sholtis) Horvath of Ashtabula; four nephews; and his goddaughter, Michaella Facello-Dudevszky.
