ASHTABULA — John Gilbert “Gib” Heino, age 94, passed away Monday, Feb. 3, 2014.

The son of John and Alina Marie (Tammelin) Heino, he was born in Ashtabula, Ohio, and remained a lifetime area resident. He was a 1937 graduate of Harbor High School. On March 14, 1942, he married his beloved wife, Frances (Mendralla) Heino. Together they would have celebrated their seventy-second wedding anniversary. Their loved has flourished and has been an inspiration to friends and family.

In 1980, he retired after thirty-seven years with the Postal Service. He served as Postmaster of the Harbor Post Office and Superintendent of Postal Operations in the Main Ashtabula Post office. He had also worked construction for the New York Central Railroad and as a carpet and tile installer for Carlisle-Allen Company.

Gib was a Veteran of the United States Army and was trained as a ski trooper. He served in the 9th Infantry Division throughout the European Theater; participating in the “D” Day invasion at Omaha Beach in Normandy. He also fought in  Northern France, Rhineland, the Ardennes, and the infamous Battle of the Bulge. During his mission to Czechoslovakia, he and his unit joined forces with the Russian Army, which was a memorable and life altering experience. Gibs’ service to his country was an inspiration to his family.

An avid sports fan, he enjoyed and played many types of sports including baseball and golf. Gib was a die-hard Cleveland fan, always believing “next year would be the year”. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.

Dearest to his heart was his family; he enjoyed time spent with his loving wife, their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Gib was an active member of the V.F.W. #943, Moose Lodge, Saybrook Grange and NARFE.

He is survived by his loving wife, Frances; two daughters, Gale (Jim) McGrevey of Colorado and Debra (Frank) Collins of North Carolina; grandchildren, Kevin (Valida) McGrevey of Colorado, Darren (Judi) McGrevey also of Colorado, Sara Collins of California and Shelby Collins of North Carolina; great-grandchildren, Braden and Alina McGrevey; niece, Marjorie (Richard) Rubly of Madison.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Arnold “Jerry” Heino; his sister, Margaret Mero; and his parents.

Services will be held at 12 p.m., Noon, on Friday, Feb. 7th, at the ZABACK-WILLIAMS-DUCRO FUNERAL HOME, 500 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula, Ohio. Deacon Richard Johnson will preside. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Ashtabula. Full Military Honors will be provided by American Legion, Dewey-Howlett Post #103.

Calling Hours will be observed from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m., Noon, on Friday, Feb. 7th, at the Funeral Home.
