ASHTABULA — Roberto Luis “Chico-Tiburon” Gonzales, age 59, died unexpectedly Sunday, March 24, 2013, in the emergency room of Ashtabula County Medical Center.

The son of Roberto and Maria D. (Cedeno) Gonzales, he was born in Utado, Puerto Rico on Oct. 15, 1953. As a child, he came to live in the United States with his parents and siblings.

He worked for Stallard and Daughters Nursery for many years, before heart disease forced him to retire. He enjoyed being a nurseryman and missed being outside; while helping people choose trees and shrubs for their homes.

Chico was a very social person, it was not unusual for him to begin a conversation with perfect strangers, and he enjoyed meeting people. He loved to help those less fortunate than himself; he would take people into his home and allow them to stay until they got back on their feet. Chico loved fast cars and enjoyed going to the local race tracks with his son. In the summer time, he could be found riding his bicycle all around Ashtabula. No one enjoyed the WWE like Chico. Hulk Hogan was his favorite wrestler, at times Chico would be so into the match he would yell at Hulk Hogan to do better. He will miss his beloved dogs, “Taquito, Bear and Molly.”

Chico’s love of live, his wonderful dedication to his friends and family, and his belief that he would out live his illness were inspirational.

He is survived by his children, Ruthie Aponte, Angelo Ramos and his fiancé Veronica of Geneva, Roberto Jr. (Rosa Roberts) Gonzales, Michael Gonzales and his fiancé Crystal Appis, and Randy Gonzales (Jessica Lee) Gonzales, all of Ashtabula; eighteen grandchildren; his siblings, Angel (Sam Novak) Colon of Geneva and Frey (Tiffany) Collazo and Fredo Collazo, both of Ashtabula, Eda Collazo of Puerto Rico and Jose Collazo of Ashtabula; his loving mother, Maria D. Gonzales of Ashtabula; and many loving nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of thirty years, Penny Marks Gonzales; daughter, Maggie Torres; sister, Mario Rios; and his father, Roberto Gonzales.

Funeral Services will be held 12 Noon, Friday, March 29th, at Greenlawn Memory Gardens Mausoleum Chapel, 3140 E. Center St., North Kingsville, Ohio, with burial to immediately follow at the cemetery.

A Calling Hour will be observed from 11 a.m. until time of Service at Noon, Friday, at the Mausoleum Chapel.

If desired, contributions in Roberto’s name may be made to the family in care of the funeral home. DUCRO FUNERAL SERVICES AND CREMATORY, 4524 Elm Ave., Ashtabula, Ohio 44004 is in charge of arrangements.
