CLEVELAND — Alice E. Harju, age 93, of W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, Ohio, died Saturday afternoon, Jan. 11, 2014, at the Metro Medical Health Center in Cleveland, Ohio.
She was born Sept. 2, 1920, in Big Timber, Mont., the daughter of Roy W. and Esther L. (Marsh) Haas and has lived in this area most of her life. She was married to Leo A. Harju on Dec. 21, 1940, at the family home on Chapel Road in Jefferson Township.
Mrs. Harju was the organist for more than 60 years at the Jefferson United Methodist Church where she was a member all of her adult life. She also played the organ at the FLEMING & BILLMAN FUNERAL HOME for more than 20 years. She has given organ lessons to numerous area children and adults over the years. Mrs. Harju had her own dance band in her younger years and played with many other dance bands. She also played for many years at High School Commencement Ceremonies, Citizen of the Year and Cattlemen’s Association Banquets.
She is survived by two sons, Ronald L. (Darla) Harju of Jefferson and David L. (Diane) Harju of West Linn, Ore.; five grandchildren, Adam C. (Anna) Harju, Heather A. (Jeffrey) Chandler, Zachary L. Harju, Madison P. Harju and Luke R. Harju; six great-grandchildren, Summer, Hunter, Alicia, Kitana, Mia and Tera; and a brother, Leland E. Haas of Brandon, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leo in 2006; and one brother, Leslie Haas.
Funeral Services will be held 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 16th, at the Jefferson United Methodist Church, 125 E. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with the Rev. Daniel Bilkert, of the Church, and retired Methodist Pastor, the Rev. Ronald Mowry officiating. Burial will be in Hickok Cemetery.
Calling Hours will be held Thursday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Jefferson Home of FLEMING & BILLMAN FUNERAL DIRECTORS & CREMATORY, INC., 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson and from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Church.
