ASHTABULA — Joseph Carl “Joe” Vendel, age 77, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, at his home.

He was born in Terre Haute, Ind., on May 5, 1936, the son of Catherine (Pfeiffer) Vendel and Carl J. Vendel. He was a proud graduate of Rose Hulman Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He also took summer classes at Michigan State University toward a Master’s Degree.

He and Kitty Clark Vendel, his favorite blind date, were married on August 8, 1959. A Veteran, he served six months in the U.S. Army at Ft. Belvoir, Va., and was in the Army Reserves for many years as a Captain.

Joe worked for the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company for his entire career, managing plants in Eastlake, Ohio, and retiring as a manager at the Ashtabula plant.

While living in Mentor for 25 years, Joe was on the Mentor School Board and was very active in many community activities.

In 1980, the Vendels came to Ashtabula where Joe served on the Board of Directors for the Ashtabula General Hospital (now ACMC). He was a dedicated member and gave many long hours helping make the hospital the great place that it is. He also was active in many community activities and clubs, all of which were very important to him and made him smile, as he loved people and service.

Joe and Kitty took several trips to Europe while visiting family in England. He loved to spend winters in Florida and have family visit there. He loved to fish in his free time and especially remembered his trips to Alaska. They belong to Our Lady of Peace Parish here in Ashtabula.

Joe and Kitty were married for 54 years and raised a wonderful family: children, Ann Rindfuss (Joe) of Hamburg, N.Y., Kitt Holcomb (Mark) of Hudson,  Ohio, and Joe Vendel (Leslie) of Lancaster, Ky.; and eight grandchildren, Jamie, Molly and Peter Rindfuss, Megan, David, Patrick and Brian Holcomb, and Addie Lehman Vendel.

Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 11th, at Our Lady of Peace Parish, Mt. Carmel Church, 1200 E. 21st St., Ashtabula, Ohio, with the Rev. Raymond Thomas, Pastor, presiding. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery at a later date.

Calling Hours will be from 12 p.m., Noon, to 2 p.m., Saturday, at the Church.
