ASHTABULA — Robert H. Laughlin, age 85, of Ashtabula, died Friday, Jan. 3, 2014, at his home.
He was born July 26, 1928, in Conneaut, Ohio, the son of Clyde and Florence (Blood) Laughlin and had been a lifetime area resident. He served in the United States Army from 1948 to 1950.
He was employed with Detrex Chemical then Ashta where he retired in 1992. He was a hard working man and had also worked as a driver for Roadway and he and his first wife owned Bob & Helen’s Fast Freeze on Main Street in Ashtabula.
He was a member of Saybrook United Methodist Church where he was very active. In his younger years, he played softball in the Industrial League where he was a fantastic player; he also played baseball with the Bears, a local baseball team. He and his brothers bowled in the Brothers’ Bowling Tournament in Erie, Pa. Bob was an avid sports fan of the Browns, Indians, Cavs and The Ohio State Buckeyes. He loved going to local high school games of all kind and watching City Rec. Softball. He enjoyed watching his son play Professional softball with the Stepien Competitors in Cleveland. He helped coach in Little League Baseball and the Peewee League baseball in Ashtabula. He and Bob Garvey started the Ashtabula High School Athletic Boosters and he worked on the chain gang at Ashtabula High football games for over 20 years, but most of all, he enjoyed watching his grandchildren in their sports and activities.
Surviving him are his wife, Barbara whom he married Nov. 15, 1997; five children, Linda Silvaggio of Ashtabula, Patti (Don) Fassett of Ashtabula, Jimmie Laughlin of Stanford, Conn., Renee (Rusty) Boomhower of Ashtabula and Robin (Robert Wight) Laughlin of Ashtabula; two step-children, Jody (Josh Reis) Charles of Grover, N.C. and Justin Fox of Ashtabula; grandchildren, Dawn (Dale) New, Christa (David) Faulkner, Tara (Roy) Moore, Robert Laughlin, Hannah Boomhower and Jamie DeCamillo; four step-grandchildren, Paige, Jilian, Ethan and Alexandria; eight great-grandchildren, Michael, Maggie, Ethan, Kayla, Ryan, Alex, Caleb and Olivia; a brother, William (Betty) Laughlin of Conneaut; and several nieces and nephews.
