John J. Wayman Sr.

ASHTABULA —  John J. Wayman Sr., age 69, of East Beech St., Jefferson, Ohio, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013, at the Ashtabula County Medical Center.

He was born Oct. 25, 1944, in Ashtabula, Ohio, the son of Nicholas and Catherine (Holleran) Wayman and has been a lifetime area resident. He was a 1962 graduate of Ashtabula High School. He married Phyllis Caruso on Nov. 23, 1963.

He had worked for Koski Construction for 40 years until his retirement and was currently Fire Chief for the Village of Jefferson, where he has served as chief since 1975.

He is a member of St. Joseph Calasanctius Church; Fire Chief Association of Ashtabula; Ohio State Fire Chief Association; Ohio State Fire Fighters Association; and a Life Member of the Local #18 Operating Engineers since 1965. He was a Jefferson Township Trustee for four years and was Jefferson Citizen of the year in 1986.

He loved to mow grass; he restored two antique fire trucks and he also restored many Farmall tractors.

Surviving him are his wife, Phyllis; a son, John (Ashley Leonard) Wayman Jr. of Jefferson; two daughters, Patricia (Ty Elwood) Stack of Salisbury, N.C., and Paula (David) Rea of Cortland, Ohio; five grandchildren, Joey (Lindsay) Stack, Stacy Wayman, James Rea, Ian Wayman and Mackenzie Wayman; a brother, Nicholas Wayman of Sheffield Township; and a sister, Margaret Drummond of Canfield, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 19th, at the St. Joseph Calasanctius Church, 32 East Jefferson St., Jefferson, with the Rev. Father John Sheridan as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Ashtabula.

Calling Hours will be Wednesday, Dec. 18th, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Jefferson Home of FLEMING & BILLMAN FUNERAL DIRECTORS & CREMATORY, INC., 49 West Jefferson St., Jefferson, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Jefferson Fire Fighters Association or to St. Joseph  Calasanctius Church. Envelopes will be available at the Funeral Home.
