Carl R. K. Sproles

TUCSON, Ariz. — Carl Robert Kyle Sproles, age 92, formerly of Ashtabula, beloved husband, and much-loved brother, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother-in-law and uncle, passed away on April 16, 2010, in Tucson, Ariz.

He was born Jan. 13, 1918, in Imboden, Wise County, Va. and grew up in Clifton, S.C. He was the sixth child of JR Sproles and Victoria Wallen Sproles.

Carl was inspired by a teacher in Clifton, who sparked his lifelong study and enjoyment of classical music, the arts and history. He graduated from The Ohio State University in 1949, the first of his family to attend college. After induction into the Army Air Corp on Sept. 9, 1942, he was sent to England during the war and was honorably discharged on Nov. 19, 1945.

After returning from England in the 8th Airforce, 356th Fighter Group, 361st Fighter Squadron, he met the love of his life, Betty J. Beegle. They married in Galion, Ohio on Sept. 4, 1948 and celebrated their 59th anniversary in 2007.

Carl and Betty moved to Saybrook, Ohio where he began his teaching career and they developed many life-long friendships in the community. His teaching career spanned 30 years, most of those at Ashtabula High School. He positively touched the lives of many students, many stopping him on the street to tell him how he had changed their lives.

Carl and Betty’s daughters, Becky and Lura, were born in 1954 and 1956. He was their tireless contributor of love that he proved in all of his photography, traveling, camping and many other mundane adventures. He chauffeured them to countless Girls Scouts, church and school affairs, all while maintaining his famous dry wit.

In his retirement years, Carl and Betty loved continuing their close friendships with their family and friends. Carl loved his Virginia reunions and travels across the United States and England with Betty. He will enjoy his new reunion with Betty who passed away in 2007.

Survivors include his daughters, Lura (Bruce) Goff of Lancaster, Ohio and Becky (John) Kososkie of Tucson, Ariz.; grandchildren, Ben (Sherrie) Kososkie of Arizona, Hanna Goff of Texas and Kathryn “KJ” Goff of Ohio; great-grandchildren, Deryk, Tristyn, Amillya “Miss Pinky,” and Kamdyn Kososkie of Ariz.; brothers–in-law, Charles Beegle of Charlottesville, Va. and Robert (Pat) Beegle of Torrington, Conn.; special niece, Juanita (Jim) Brown of Georgia; and many other nieces, nephews and cousins. We’ll miss you terribly.

We would like to thank all those who helped our parents in their later years especially wonderful neighbors, Lynn and Diane Stright and family and friends, Lloyd and Judy Richards. Also thanks to Saybrook United Methodist Church for their help and prayers.

A Celebration of Carl’s life will be held at a later date in Arizona.
