The Grand Valley Concert Band placed first in its division, with a Superior rating, during a competition in Williamsburg, Va.
Under the direction of Timothy A. Carlson, the band recently participated in the FiestaVal Band Competition. The three day trip included a performance on Friday evening and a trip to Busch Gardens Williamsburg on Saturday.
The band did very well in the competition, placing first in its division with a Superior rating from the panel of three judges. Jessica Bluhm also won a soloist trophy for her trumpet solo in one of the pieces performed by the band.
“We really thank the Grand Valley community, Grand Valley Band Boosters, and the GV school district. Without their support, this trip would not have happened,” Carlson said. “We sold over 10,000 candy bars and worked a lot of concession stands to earn the money to go on this trip. The kids were really excited and cheerfully worked hard to go.”
Carlson continued, “This is the culmination of a year’s worth of work, so earning a superior rating also makes this trip so much more meaningful for the band members. I am very proud of their work.”
