Annual truck show to benefit Special Olympics

GENEVA TOWNSHIP — It’s a roaring thunder when the Class 8 on the Lake Truck Show pulls into Indian Creek Campground.

Sponsored by Truckers Helping Hands, the show, which will include a parade of lights, will be held June 27 and 28.

Organizer Brian Sabo said the event raises as much as $3,500 for Ashtabula County Special Olympics.

Truckers Helping Hands is a group of truckers, “and other local folks,” Sabo said, “who just want to reach out and give back to the community.”

The group hosts a truck show at the Ashtabula County Fair every year, and now also hosts the Class 8 on the Lake show with Special Olympians involved.

“We bring them up to the show and let them vote on the trucks and present special awards,” Sabo said. “We put them in the trucks for the Parade of Lights each night and let them ride with us. It’s a really fun and rewarding experience.”

The Parade of Lights is held at 9 p.m. each night when the trucks pull out of the campground and travel down the Geneva-on-the-Lake “strip.”

The event will also feature the sanctioned pedal tractor pull for kids on Saturday, with signups at noon and the event at 1 p.m. The pedal tractor pull is open to kids ages 3 to 11. The fundraiser will also feature an auction and refreshment sales.

Sabo said the event has something for everyone, with vehicles from semi-trucks to pickup trucks, and maybe even a car show this year.
