Departments to battle each other in games of firefighting skill

GENEVA-ON-THE-LAKE —

If you can’t stand the heat – go to the lake.
Firefighters from across the region will put on their gear and fire up their hoses for the annual Firefighter’s Roundup on June 14 to play some friendly water games and show off their fire engines.
The event, held at The Landing, will include vendors, antique fire trucks, a parade at 1 p.m., firefighter games including water battles, a bucket brigade and tug of war for firefighters, and live entertainment.
The Roundup will be held behind the Old Firehouse Winery in Geneva-on-the-Lake. Events begin at noon. Admission is free.
Festival coordinator Brook Collin Hall said the first roundup was held at the lake in the 1960’s, but got too big for the space.
People know the event for the food, wine, fun and entertainment, but the real attractions are the firefighters and their engines.
“We have teams and engines come from as far away as Syracuse and Toledo,” he said.
The antique engines and historical gear are also crowd pleasers, Hall said.
“Every department brings an engine and many of the engines are antique,” he said.
The games include “waterball,” a game of hose mastery and teamwork, is held right on the lakefront. Firefighters also climb the water slide as an obstacle course.

The Landing will also offer the 2013 Lake Erie Wine Fest on June 21 and 22.
The weekend of wine, wine education, food pairings and entertainment will include 16 Ohio wineries, music, entertainment, and an adventure, Hall said.
