Kiwanis Club to host annual park cleanup

GENEVA — After a long, tough winter, Kiwanis Park needs some tender loving care and some strong volunteers for the annual spring cleanup, said Kiwanis officer Chris Larick.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 10 at the park on Route 84. The event needs volunteers, Larick said.

“Bring yard tools and your muscles, work with us and you will get a free lunch!” he said. “Lowe's in Ashtabula has agreed to help the club on Saturday and is sending several people to work!”

The Geneva Kiwanis Club is dedicated to maintaining and improving the park.

This 17-acre facility, located on the corner of Rt. 84 and Kiwanis Park Drive, is used for club meetings, parties, other get-togethers, wedding receptions and showers, softball, kickball and other sporting events, and all sorts of other activities.

“It's also a great place to relax in on a hot day or to walk a dog,” Larick said.

The Geneva Kiwanis Club has also purchased playground equipment and is in the process of installing it.

Kiwanis Club park chairman Larry Holcomb hopes to build a stage in the east pavilion for musical performances.

The club would also like to obtain enough asphalt grindings from the city of Geneva to improve the parking lot.

“People who wish to help out on Park Cleanup Day may find themselves helping out with some of those projects, on general cleanup of the park or in planting flowers donated by Lowe's,” Larick said.

The club is also constructing a 1,200-foot wheelchair and walk path. This concrete path will be five feet wide and four inches thick. The estimated cost of the project is $10,000.

“The walkway would help the handicapped navigate the park and could also be used by skateboarders or just people who want to enjoy the park,” Larick said. “The club has already raised a substantial portion of the needed amount through fundraisers and from contributions from Kiwanis International and Geneva’s Eagles club.

Vector Security has also pledged to help with it and the club is seeking additional funding from Geneva CIC.”
