Annual 4-H Camp was sold out!

Hello, Ashtabula County! We at at OSU Extension had a busy 4th of July holiday week as we conducted our annual 4-H Camp for youth ages 8 to 14 at 4-H Camp Whitewood in Windsor from June 29 through July 5.

It was a fabulous week.

Today, I would like to recap our 4-H Camp. To me, this is the most valuable 4-H youth development activity that we conduct each year.

We were sold-out with 200 campers, counselors and adult staff.

This camping week is the culmination of a lot of hard work of our 4-H Camp Counselors who began their training program early this year.

This year’s theme was “Red, Whitewood & Blue.”

Our counselors did a wonderful job developing activities around this patriotic theme for campers. I am so impressed with the maturity of our counselors and their leadership for our campers.

Our campers enjoyed swimming, hiking, crafts, boating, recreation, shooting sports and many of our tradition games, songs and activities.

One of the special evening activities included bringing some of our local heroes in to speak with the campers.

The campers were delighted to see all of the safety equipment and learn from representatives from the Windsor Fire Department, Rome Fire Dive Team, Middlefield Fire Department, Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Department, and University Hospital’s MedEvac.

I know they were shocked to see the UH MedEvac helicopter land in the middle of 4-H camp!

We also had local experts come in to lead great natural resources programming.

Thanks to Jim Welker from the Ashtabula County Soil & Water Conservation District and Brandy Hanuosky from Lake MetroParks.

The success of the camp is credit to the wonderful counselors, deans, and OSU Program Assistant Abbey Averill.

Kudos to the following counselors who made this a successful week:

Anthony Anastasia, Adam Bryski, Kimberly Brumagin, Zoe Contenza, Ben Damm, David Daughters, Emily Deering, Tyler Drought, Adam Drugovich, Megan Dunlap, Gina Dlwgosh, Vanessa Frank, Karissa Hartzell, Andrew Holden, Olivia Holden, Matt Horgan, Laura Jackam, Cody Kanicki, Megan Kern, Brad Kobernik, Kelsey Lillie, Paige Mottley, Brittany Nevison, Emily O‘Dell, Logan Platt, Kaycee Rhoades, Caitlyn Sloan, Troy Stitt, Justin Swiger, Kaylee Thomas, Ally Thompson, and Ryan Watts.

More and more city dwellers are discovering the joys of growing their own fruits and vegetables in backyard gardens. Unfortunately, they are also learning what farmers have known forever. Deer, raccoons, rabbits, groundhogs, birds and pets can do major damage to crops and flowers.

  • Page F5 Gardening 1.jpg Gardening in raised beds has many advantages for the home gardener

A raised bed is easier to plant because you don’t have to bend down as far. Weeding is also less strenuous because you can easily reach into the smaller area. Watering is more efficient since you have a much smaller area to water. Because raised beds are never walked upon, the soil is not compacted, which makes hand tilling a breeze.
