NORTH KINGSVILLE — This holiday season, primitive and rustic-art fans will want to make tracks to a new gift shop in town.
Muddy Moose Tracks, located at 2700 E. Center St., on the corner of Routes 20 and 193, has been open since Nov. 1.
The unusual name for the gift shop is a story related to owner Erica Fenton’s large chocolate-colored Labrador retriever named Moose.
“Our chocolate Lab goes in an out of our house and when he comes in from outside, he leaves plenty of muddy Moose tracks. So I thought that would be a creative name for our primitive/ rustic gift shop,” Fenton said. “Plus, people might be curious about the name and come in and ask about it.”
Many of the items sold at Muddy Moose Tracks are original pieces handcrafted by Fenton or other local artisans, including wreaths, swags, mini-spiral trees, homemade potpourri, machine-piece quilts and more.
“I have always done craft shows, and my husband suggested I should open my own store, so we looked into a location and opened,” Fenton said.
Featured items include Woodwick Candles, Park Design art and home decor, Campbell Pottery, Leanin’ Tree Greeting Cards, beach glass jewelry, hand-painted paper ornaments from Florida, and more.
“The Woodwick Candles are really neat. The wicks are wood, and they crackle like a fire when lit. Plus, the candles are soy,” she said.
In step with the holiday season, Muddy Moose Tracks is stuffed full of Christmas decorations. Don’t worry: This gift shop will be open all year long.
“The women in my family have a saying, ‘You can never have enough Christmas decorations,’” Fenton said, while pointing out the plethora of snowmen, stars, reindeer and snowflakes adorning the various Christmas trees.
“We have been doing very well since we opened. People really like coming inside our cozy store,” she said.
