ASHTABULA — A simple traffic stop turned into a high-speed pursuit and ended with a man driving his vehicle into a pole around 6:45 p.m. Friday, said Sgt. Scott Slocum of the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Department.
Slocum said a deputy was stationed at Phil’s Catering, at the intersection of Route 45 and Carpenter Road, and noticed a van being driven erratically, turn onto Carpenter Road, heading east.
The deputy began to follow the vehicle. Before the deputy had a chance to put on his lights, the driver floored it, accelerating to 80 mph, Slocum said. He said the driver ran the red light at the Carpenter Road-Ohio Avenue intersection, lost control of the vehicle and drove into a pole.
Slocum said the driver was the only occupant of the vehicle and was not injured in the crash. Community Care Ambulance and the Ashtabula Fire Department went to the scene to assist the sheriff’s department.
Slocum said the name of the driver was not available but he likely will be charged with driving while impaired and fleeing and eluding. Slocum said the driver also might be charged with reckless driving.
