ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP — Bad weather? Didn’t matter.
Mallory Kreider wanted to leave her mark on the Edgewood cross country program. There were to be no excuses made if she didn’t accomplish the goal she set out to achieve at the Ashtabula County Meet at Edgewood on Tuesday.
Fighting a cold, heavy wind, some rain and a muddy course, Kreider set a course record with a 19:14 in winning the race.
“The conditions are the same for everyone,” Kreider said. “We run no matter what kind of weather we get. You can’t let it get into your head. You have to be mentally tough.”
Edgewood coach Steve Hill tried to let Kreider know that a course record may be a little out of reach, given the conditions the race was going to be run under. But Kreider wanted no part of what her coach was trying to do.
“(Mallory) definitely had her goals set,” Hill said. “She didn’t want to hear excuses. Her goal was the course record and she got it.
“We explained to be careful with her expectations because of the weather. She was not going to think about it. She wanted it. She wanted to run hard and go after it. That’s what she did.”
Kreider’s course-record time was five seconds better than the previous record of 19:19 set by Lakeside’s Mallory Dragon.
“I’m satisfied with my time,” Kreider said. “This was the last time I’d have the opportunity to run this course. I wanted to make sure I beat the 19:19 time. I would’ve loved to have run a faster time, but the course wasn’t conducive to that.”
Juliana Simmons made it a 1-2 finish for the Warriors. Ashley Keenan, Edgewood’s only other runner, was eighth in 23:02.
“They’ve been running hard for the last two or three years,” Hill said. “They’re just training really well right now. Obviously, Mallory’s going to do her thing. And who better (for Simmons) to learn from? Juliana is absorbing all she can. She was 1:30 faster than last year in these same conditions.
“Her expectations are high and she ran awfully darn good.”
Simmons was second in 21:07.
“I stayed relaxed and hydrated throughout the day,” Simmons said. “I tried to work during the third mile to keep a good pace going.
“Race-wise, I try to keep the front in sight and pick it up. I’m not worrying about what’s behind me, but about what’s in front of me. I focus ahead and keep pushing.”
