GENEVA — Amy Reed sees a lot of tears in her line of work: tears of sorrow, sadness, determination and even tears of relief.
As the lead mammographer at UH-Geneva Medical Center, Reed performs cancer-detecting mammograms that set the tone for the lives of women and their families.
“One in eight women will get breast cancer,” Reed said. “Every day I see women who have been through treatment, are going through treatment, are struggling, are survivors. I see the people who come in with them, the family members and friends. Breast cancer has affected them all.”
To support the patients and their loved ones, and to bring awareness and education about the importance of mammograms and early cancer detection, Reed and her friend Debbie Severino are hosting Stamp for the Cure, a crafty way to sponsor the Geneva Medical Center’s Walk for the Cure. Reed and Severino will hold the event 3:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the hospital. Participants of all experience levels can make 10 hand-stamped cards with envelopes. All materials are precut. Cost is $20 per person. Registration is required to reserve a card-making kit. Refreshments will be served.
“You don’t have to be there at the start. Just allow two hours for the crafting,” Severino said.
The ladies also will hold a stamp sale with Stamp It Up merchandise and a special pink display of the Horizon of Hope line of Longaberger Baskets. Proceeds benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation for the Cure and the Walk for the Cure event to be held Sept. 21 at Geneva High School.
