CONNEAUT — The Port Authority has begun touting a former fisheries building as the perfect location for a waterfront business.
To spread the word, the port panel is placing advertisements in area newspapers. The Port Authority, according to the ads, foresees a “restaurant, winery, microbrewery or retail business” in that location.
Many years ago, the building, a few steps from Conneaut Harbor, once was home to a commercial fishing business. Now, the authority uses it to store vehicles and equipment.
“It can serve a better purpose than our maintenance building,” said Denver Spieldenner, port authority chairman. “We’re open to ideas.”
Word of mouth already had generated some interest in the building prior to the advertising campaign, Spieldenner said.
“People have asked about it,” he said. “Two or three have taken a look at the building prior to placing the ad.”
The authority recently unveiled a long-range plan that envisioned shops and restaurants at the lakefront. The plan was put into action earlier this year, when port members helped a restaurant open in a building used as a clubhouse for dock-holders. A parking lot for the restaurant was carved from a portion of Moses Cleaveland Park, recently deeded to the port panel by the city of Conneaut.
More business-related activity is ahead at the waterfront, Spieldenner said.
“It’s part of our plan to enhance the lakefront,” he said.
