Ashtabula gets in holiday spirit

ASHTABULA — Ashtabula is hosting a birthday party for America this weekend, and everyone is invited to attend.
Music, fireworks and games are on tap for the celebration, starting Saturday with a salute to Kent State University-Ashtabula on Bridge Street in the historic Ashtabula harbor. The event begins at 10 a.m. with prizes, games and entertainment, and closes at 3 p.m.
Toes will start tapping and hearts will throb red, white and blue at 6 p.m. when the Ashtabula Orchestra performs patriotic music on stage at Walnut Beach. The concession stand and restrooms will be open. Bring your own chair.
“We’ll have a ticket system ready to expedite things,” said Marilyn Wulff, who co-owns the concession stand with her husband, Max.
The Wulffs will sell $1 tickets ahead of time and patrons will buy food and treats with a ticket, relieving the clerks and customers of having to make change. If customers buy too many tickets, their money will be refunded at the end of the evening, Marilyn Wulff said.
The party will end after a spectacular fireworks display, starting at 10 p.m., and featuring more than $5,000 worth of fireworks. There will be lots of noise and plenty of color and sparkle, including fountains, rockets, comets and palm trees.
Ashtabula Fireworks erected a sign earlier this week at Walnut Beach, listing everyone who donated money so the fireworks show could go on.
Then, come Sunday, First Merit Family Fun Day will begin at noon on Bridge Street. Children of all ages will have the opportunity to show off their Lego displays and win prizes.
A Farmer’s Market also will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, in the empty lot next to the Bridge Street Pizza.
All of the events are free and open to the public.
