Semi stops short of hitting bar

— GENEVA — At least one person was transported to UH-Geneva Medical Center when a semi truck crashed into a small sport utility vehicle at routes 84 and 534 Monday, witnesses said at the scene.
The truck driver, Michael Carlstrom of Erie, was southbound on Route 534 at 11 a.m. when he struck a gold Oldsmobile SUV. The semi truck, owned by Custom Plastic Specialties Inc. of Erie, careened off the road, over the curb and into the front parking lot of the Last Call Bar and Grill, stopping just short of hitting the building.
The bar has been closed for several months and the truck ran over the for sale sign in the parking lot.
“It came close,” Carlstrom said, “but I didn’t hit the building.”
The SUV, owned by Ashtabula resident Michael Blood, sustained severe front-end damage.
The driver, who was not identified at the scene, was transported to the hospital.
The truck sustained front driver’s side damage. Chunks of fiberglass truck body parts littered the roadside and Carlstrom gathered the biggest pieces and stowed them in the cab of his truck. The bumper of Blood’s SUV ended up in the bar parking lot while police and fire officials worked in the rain to clean spilled battery acid and other automotive fluids from the road.
