Seventh heaven for Eagle girls
McQuoid’s squad continues its dominance of the field

ANDOVER TOWNSHIP — Six sounded great to the Geneva girls track team on Wednesday. Seven sounded equally sweet on Saturday.
Fresh on the heels of capturing their sixth straight Northeastern Conference championship, the Eagle girls gave a stellar performance at the All-Ashtabula County Track Meet at Pymatuning Valley High School. Winning five of 17 events, including three of four relays, Geneva led by a comfortable 167-112 margin over Edgewood to wrap up its seventh straight county meet title. The Warriors won four events, including the 3200-meter relay.
Jefferson was third with 64 and wins in two events. SS. John and Paul rode a sprint triple in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes from junior Mary Mahoney, who set two meet records along the way, and a win from Jamie Kapferer in the shot put, to fourth place with 49 points.
Conneaut got two wins and racked up 43 points. Lakeside with 40, PV with 29 and Grand Valley with 22 rounded out the field.
The Eagles were golden from start to finish, led by seniors Heather Combs, Jessica Kenny and Amy Carrier. Combs broke her own Ashtabula County record in the pole vault and her own meet record by clearing 10-0, then added the championship in the 300-meter hurdles. In each case, she led a one-two finish with an Ankrom, as Katie Ankrom matched Combs’ old mark in the pole vault at 9-0 and Mary Ankrom finished second to her in the hurdles.
Kenny got the victorious 400-, 800- and 1600-meter relays started, while Carrier anchored the wins in the two shorter races. Stacy Mead and Nicole Smith shared honors on the two short relays, while Hilary Hambleton and Domina Dibiase teamed with Kenny and Smith to cap off Geneva’s victory with a new meet record in the 1600-meter relay.
Geneva coach Bob McQuoid said winning the NEC Meet earlier in the week took the pressure off for the county meet.
“It felt good having the conference meet out of the way early,” he said. “I think having the county meet now allowed us to come in more relaxed this year. The girls knew this was a big thing today.
“I was really proud of Heather today. She’s been struggling in the pole vault a little, so I told her to go out and have fun today and she came through. I was proud of the girls on the relays, too, especially Jessica and Amy. We finished it off well. It was a great day.”
Combs was happy to turn in a strong effort in the pole vault and to take on the hurdles championship as well.
“I’ve been pretty inconsistent in the pole vault lately,” she said. “I had a bad practice (Friday). I’ve changed poles, and I’ve struggled with it, but I felt good with it today and the weather conditions were perfect.
“I just missed 10-6 today, too. Once we get the standards right, I should make that. I’m confident I can get to 11 yet, which should get me to state. I felt good in the hurdles, too. It was a good day.”
Edgewood was led by sophomore distance runner Mallory Kreider, who won the 1600- and 3200-meter runs individually and led off the 3200-meter relay of Ashley Deforest, Ashley Keenan and Gayle Foote. Jackie Smith won the long jump for the Warriors.
“Our girls had a great day,” Edgewood coach Steve Hill said. “We got another great individual performance from Mallory. Gayle really helped us out with her leg of the relay. We changed the lineup and put Ashley Keenan in there and they ran great. It was a good team effort today.”
Kreider topped in style a busy week in which she won the 800-, 1600- and 3200-meter runs at the conference meet.
