ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP — Charlene Chernock, assistant manager at the Waldenbooks/Border Store in Ashtabula Mall, and staff were busy this past two weeks with a benefit project for Homesafe Inc., domestic violence shelte.
“We do these book sale drives several times a year. We chose Homesafe Inc. because its a good organization helping people. Our customers bought the books to give to the children staying at the shelter with their mothers,” Chernock said.
On Thursday, she presented a bin full of new books to shelter director Sherri Price. It was almost overflowing.
“When I called Homesafe to discuss our project I did not know Sherri was there as director. We met years ago when both of us worked here at one of the mall stores,” Chernock said.
Price said the shelter staff and volunteers are redoing the toy room at the shelter.
“The new books will be a great addition. All our old, worn books we have are going in the July 11-12 Bonanza Garage Sale being held at Saybrook Plaza. We really appreciate what Charlene did here for us and their customers, who donated the purchased books,” Price said.
She said the shelter is accepting donations for the mid-July garage sale benefit for non-profit organizations. In addition, a benefit dinner dance is set by Homesafe Inc. trustee board and volunteers for May 17.
It will be held int the Moose Lodge on North Bend Road from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Tickets are $40 per couple and available by calling the Homesafe office, 440-992-2727, Price said.
