Published July 10, 2009 12:26 am - WEEKENDER for July 10, 2009: The St. Peter’s Episcopal Church Fine Arts Committee is presenting New Tricks, a jazz quartet, as a fundraiser to support its regular Great Music without Barriers concert series New Tricks will appear as part of jazz quartet Star Beacon ASHTABULA — The St. Peter’s Episcopal Church Fine Arts Committee is presenting New Tricks, a jazz quartet, as a fundraiser to support its regular Great Music without Barriers concert series. New Tricks will appear at the church July 14 at 7:30 p.m. Proceeds from the concert will be used to continue the regular series, as well as to present working, hands-on concerts in Ashtabula Area City Schools. New Tricks is a chord-less quartet featuring memorable compositions and dynamic group interplay. The band is co-led by veteran saxophonist Mike Lee and emerging trumpet star Ted Chubb, a graduate of Ashtabula High School. Originally formed for casual afternoon jam sessions, the band quickly defined itself as a unique musical ensemble rooted in jazz tradition and committed to musical exploration. The rhythm section includes Kellen Harrison on bass and Shawn Baltazor on drums. “The amount of musical knowledge possessed by these three young musicians is staggering — for musicians of any age. They have caused me to entirely rethink my approach to music,” said Lee. Originally from Ashtabula, Chubb began playing the trumpet at 10, but did not become serious about his instrument until his discovery of jazz at 15. Chubb’s passion for jazz led him to pursue music at The Ohio State University.Chubb became involved in the professional jazz scene and performed with Midwest jazz legends Gene Walker and Bobby Floyd. He also toured regionally and abroad with the Afro-Rican ensemble. In 2003. Chubb enrolled in the graduate program at Rutgers University in New Jersey to study with master trumpet teacher William Fielder. While at school, Chubb became involved in the New York City jazz scene playing with artists such as Cecil Brooks III, Bruce Williams, Brad Leali, Ralph Bowen, Kyle Kohler, Billy Hart, Alvester Garnet and Kenny Davis. Chubb has appeared on ABC’s “Nightline” with the Cecil's Big Band and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, performing with Jersey Boys. Chubb has appeared at jazz festivals across the globe in Austria, Switzerland, France, and St. Lucia. In 2006 Chubb was a participant in The Betty Carter Jazz Ahead program at the Kennedy Center. He is freelancing in New York City and focuses on his own projects. Chubb teaches private lessons, ensembles and workshops. He is on faculty at the Montclair State University Jazz Connections workshop each August. Since 2006, Chubb has been on the road with the First National Tour of the Tony award winning Broadway show Jersey Boys. A donation of $10 for adults and $5 for others is requested.
