START OF THE ‘HEART’

Three young women have own problems in new play at arts center

ASHTABULA — G. B. Community Theatre will open Beth Henley’s “Crimes of the Heart” tonight at 8.

Additional performances will be held Saturday and Sunday and Feb. 15, 16, 17, 22, and 23. Friday and Saturday performances begin at 8 p.m. Sunday matinees will begin at 2 p.m.

This Pulitzer Prize winning comedy features the “miss”-adventures of three young misses: Lenny, Meg, and Babe Magrath, each sister with her own set of problems. Lenny has failed in love; Meg has failed as a singer, and Babe, the youngest, has failed to kill her husband when she shot him in the stomach. Together, the three women have gathered together as their grandfather lives out his final hours.

Directed by Linda Fundis of Austinburg, the cast includes Amanda Latva as Lenny Magrath, Angela Orr as Chick Boyle, David Ardas Doc Porter, Ashley Perts as Meg Magrath, Gabby Sherbeyn as Babe Botrelle and Josh Woodard as Barbette Lloyd.

As an added special event on the evening of Feb. 8, those in attendance for that night’s performance will be the first to hear the announcement of the line-up for the exciting 2013 Straw Hat Theatre season during the intermission. With Straw Hat auditions just a few weeks away, actors at the special announcement will be first to know what shows to prepare for, and theater-goers will be the first to know what shows are in store for the summer theater season.

Dinner before the show will be held Feb. 16. Reservations and prepayment are required no later than noon on Feb. 13.  Dinner seating begins at 6:30 p.m. Cost is $16 plus the price of theater ticket.

The menu for the evening will include Italian wedding soup, warm dinner rolls, tossed salad with Italian dressing, Chicken cacciatore over spaghetti with green peppers, onions and tomatoes, and strawberry cupcake with chocolate drizzle served with a chocolate-covered strawberry. Cooking for the evening will be Lisa Lowery.

Walk-in box office tickets for the play are $14 adults and $12 seniors/students. However, you can save $2 per ticket when you purchase tickets in advance. For tickets or more information call the arts center at 964-3396.

  • wd heat rocky 9 .jpg ‘The Rocky Horror Show’ is well performed, funny and worth seeing

Mention “The Rocky Horror Show” and almost everyone has an opinion, whether they've seen the movie or stage adaptation or not. It has been a cult classic for over three decades, since its release in 1975, and it has garnered plenty of criticism and negative commentary. Because public reaction to this extremely odd piece of musical comedy has been so strong for so long, many with an opinion have never even seen the movie or play. And many certainly do not understand that it is a spoof of shock theater. Yet they continue to berate the show as immoral and lewd.
