‘Nutcracker’ a holiday tradition

ASHTABULA —  The holiday season is here and with it comes the annual production of Ballet Theatre Ashtabula’s “The Nutcracker” at the Ashtabula Arts Center.

The play transports audiences into the most magical place of all—the world as seen through the eyes of a child.

The full-scale production of “The Nutcracker” will be presented on Nov. 30, Dec. 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, 13, 14, 15 and 16.  Saturday and Sunday matinees begin at 2 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday performances begin at 7:30 p.m. There will be no 7:30 performance on Dec.r 1.

“The Nutcracker” tells a story of a young girl named Clara and her magical  doll. One Christmas Eve, as the clock strikes midnight, Clara awakens to find her Christmas tree growing to wondrous heights. As the room fills with giant ferocious mice, Clara’s beloved Nutcracker doll comes to life and leads an army of toy soldiers into battle against the wicked mice and their evil Mouse King.

As the night progresses, the Nutcracker transforms into a handsome prince who

whisks Clara away onto a magical midnight journey through a beautiful snowy wood to the enchanted land of the sweets.

There will also be a sugar plum luncheon at noon Dec. 8, so children can meet the characters.

Luncheon costs $12 for adults and $9 for children. The luncheon also allows $1 off on the ticket for the 2 p.m. show.

General admission adult tickets for the play are $13, seniors/students are $12, child aged

12 and under are $11 or save $2 per ticket when you purchase in advance,

Advance tickets must be purchased prior to 4 p.m. on the day of the show or on Saturday for Sunday performances.

In addition to performances, several “Nutcracker” events are also being

offered.

Following the 2 p.m. performances on Dec. 9 and 15 “Clara’s Punch and Sweet Treats” will be held in the gallery.

Adult tickets are $7 and children aged 12 and under are $5.

Deadline for pre-registration and pre-payment are Dec. 3 for the Dec. 9 event and Dec. 10 for the Dec. 15 event.

  • wd heat rocky 9 .jpg ‘The Rocky Horror Show’ is well performed, funny and worth seeing

Mention “The Rocky Horror Show” and almost everyone has an opinion, whether they've seen the movie or stage adaptation or not. It has been a cult classic for over three decades, since its release in 1975, and it has garnered plenty of criticism and negative commentary. Because public reaction to this extremely odd piece of musical comedy has been so strong for so long, many with an opinion have never even seen the movie or play. And many certainly do not understand that it is a spoof of shock theater. Yet they continue to berate the show as immoral and lewd.
