Rabbit Run goes to the cinema for warm-weather plays

MADISON — Still Christmas shopping?

That’s so last week. It’s time to think summer, as in summer theater.

Rabbit Run Community Arts Association has announced its move-themed productions.

It all starts May 31 with the opening of “Steel Magnolias.” The play deals with Truvy’s Beauty Shop, a gathering place for anybody who is anybody in a small Louisiana town. The comedy tells the story of six women who handle life’s rougher edges with wisdom, strength and laughter.

All productions begin at 8 p.m. for all plays. “Steel Magnolias” runs May 31and July 1, 2, 6, 7 and 8.

“How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” runs June 14, 15, 16, 20, 21, 22, 23, 27, 28 and 29.

It follows J. Pierrepont Finch as he joins the mailroom of the Worldwide Wicket Co. and climbs the company ladder in a matter of days with the assistance of a self-help book.

“The Sound of Music” tells of the struggle to adapt to a monastic life. Maria is sent to serve as the governess of a military captain’s seven children. Her generous spirit changes their lives as the world begins to change around them.

It runs July 13, 14, 18, 19, 20, 21, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, Aug. 1, 2 and 3.

“The 39 Steps” is a comedy based on an early Alfred Hitchcock thriller. The dashing Richard Hannay is pulled into a tale of intrigue after authorities mistakenly accuse him of murder. He encounters more than 150 characters, all of whom are performed by three actors.

It unravels Aug. 13, 16, 17, 18, 21, 22, 23, 24, 29, 30 and 31.

Season tickets and gift certificates for season tickets are available at 428-5913. Auditions for the four summer productions will be in March.

  • wd heat rocky 9 .jpg ‘The Rocky Horror Show’ is well performed, funny and worth seeing

Mention “The Rocky Horror Show” and almost everyone has an opinion, whether they've seen the movie or stage adaptation or not. It has been a cult classic for over three decades, since its release in 1975, and it has garnered plenty of criticism and negative commentary. Because public reaction to this extremely odd piece of musical comedy has been so strong for so long, many with an opinion have never even seen the movie or play. And many certainly do not understand that it is a spoof of shock theater. Yet they continue to berate the show as immoral and lewd.
