ASHTABULA — G. B. Community Theatre at the Ashtabula Arts Center will open a Noel Coward classic “Blithe Spirit” Friday with additional performances Saturday, Sunday, Nov. 6, 7, 8, 12, 13, and 14.
Sponsored by KeyBank, “Blithe Spirit” tells the story of Charles and Ruth, who plan an amusing evening with friends by inviting Madame Arcati, a medium, to their home to hold a séance.
But the event turns into a nightmare of hilarity when Charles' very jealous first wife returns from the hereafter and attempts to take matters into her own ethereal hands! This improbable farce takes the audience on an amusing journey through this world and the next in one of theaters most enduring comedy classics!
Directed by Linda Fundis, “Blithe Spirit” provides a feel-good evening in which audiences can sit back and relax, knowing they're seeing truly funny play by one of America's best stage writers. Coward wrote “Blithe Spirit” during a stay at Portmeirion in 1941, after his London office and apartment had been destroyed in the Blitz.
Feeling that the public would want something amusing and escapist during the dark days of the war, it took him only seven days to write the hilarious script which proved a hit with the public. It was performed nearly 2000 times during it's first run. In 1954, Coward adapted the play to be filmed.
