Published October 28, 2009 03:30 pm - WEEKENDER for Oct. 30, 2009: The Ashtabula County Choral Music Society will present the first in its 20th anniversary series of recitals Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 4506 Elm Ave. Gwilt, Askerova perform for ACCMS First in its 20th anniversary series at First United Methodist Church Star Beacon ASHTABULA — The Ashtabula County Choral Music Society will present the first in its 20th anniversary series of recitals Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 4506 Elm Ave.
Featured recitalists will be local artists Natella Askerova, piano; and Tom Gwilt, classical guitar. Askerova will perform a program that includes works by .Tchaikovsky, Mendelssohn, Debussy, Rachmaninov and Chopin. The selections to be performed by Gwilt include music by Fernando Sor, Luis de Narvaez, J. S. Bach (arranged for guitar by the performer), and Villa-Lobos. Natella Askerova was born and raised in Baku, Azerbaijan (former Soviet Union). At the age of 8, she began her musical education at a specialized school of music. After graduating from the school, she continued her study at the Baku College of Music, where she received a degree in piano pedagogy and collaboration. Askerova completed a post-graduate degree in piano performance, pedagogy and collaboration at the Azerbaijani State Conservatory. During and following her study at the conservatory, Askerova presented solo concerts, performed with various chamber orchestras and ensembles and provided accompaniment for instrumental and vocal performers. She also performed as a soloist with the Azerbaijani State Symphony Orchestra. During the last 17 years, Askerova has performed as a soloist, directed dozens of musicals in Ashtabula, Lake and Geauga counties, and provided accompaniment for a number of singing groups, including the Madison Chorale, Ashtabula County Choral Music Society and various school choirs. For the past 12 years, she has served as the director of music at the Second Congregational Church in Ashtabula. In addition to solo and ensemble performances for various special events and services, Askerova frequently provides solo and ensemble accompaniment for the area high school students. Askerova is a piano instructor at the Ashtabula Arts Center and Madison Fine Arts Association. Gwilt started playing guitar at age 16 and is self taught. While attending Bowling Green State University he helped start the guitar program and taught guitar at BGSU and the University of Toledo. Gwilt has performed as soloist with the Erie Chamber Orchestra and the Toledo Symphony. Additional performance credits include several solo recitals and event appearances throughout northern Ohio and northwest Pennsylvania. Gwilt is a resident of Conneaut. The ACCMS Anniversary Recital Series will include four recitals featuring local performers from among the 20 years of the Ashtabula County Choral Music Society family of participants and staff.
