SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP — “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” a Sondheim musical, isn’t known as a warhorse, but those who enjoy slapstick and vaudeville will like the script and familiar songs.

Presented by the Lakeside Theatre Company in the Performing Arts Center at Lakeside High School on Sanborn Road, this production boasts many talented actors.

There are names which are familiar to playgoers in and around the area. Mike Breeze, Connor O'Brien, Mike S. Riffe and Mark Pendleton might be the most well-know monikers among the listing of the dramatis personae. They are joined by Jennifer Walsh, Katie Tredent and Cathy Fasano, others who have entertained locally.

There is the opportunity for laughter galore in this show, that is directed by Chris D'Itri. However, continuity of the plot line becomes blurred several times because of the poor quality and balance of the sound system. Not being able to follow the spoken words or the words of the songs does not lend itself to full enjoyment of a play. I can't offer a fair judgment of this show; quite frankly, sitting just more than half-way back in the theater, I had great difficulty surviving the 'dead spots' on the stage.

Granted, there are some bright spots that brought applause and laughter. Too, everyone on stage seemed to be giving it his/her all. The pit band did an admirable job with the music; there was no problem hearing their offerings.

Hopefully, those in charge of this production have recognized the problems that presented themselves and have made the necessary adjustments.

“Forum” continues tonight, Saturday and Sunday at 8. Tickets can be purchased at the events entrance of the high school.
