Courtroom drama creates great evening ‘12 Angry Men’ nicely put together production

ASHTABULA — The verdict is in.
G.B. Community Theatre at the Ashtabula Arts Center is guilty of entertaining its audience with an intense production of “12 Angry Men.”
Billed as a play about the decision-making process that goes on in a jury room, the script really addresses the idea of how the presentation of facts may be colored by the personalities of the people who present them.
The protagonist — the guy in the light hat, Juror 8 — is obviously the hero. On the flip side of the coin, Juror 3, wearing the black fedora and not wanting to understand, irritates the viewers with his loud unyielding insistence that the accused is guilty.
Character study is important in this show. Throughout the evening, every juror – save 8 — exposed his personality, either by talking about himself or paralleling his life with the life of a witness. Juror 5 grew up in a slum area; 10 was racist; 12 was more interested in his advertising business; 2 was Charlie Milquetoast personified. Juror 9 sympathized with and understood the elder witness. Juror 11, an immigrant, expressed his views about the American legal process; and the list goes on.
One often hears about or reads about comic relief, an interlude or passage that is included in a script that is designed to relieve tension. As theories of guilt began to be dismantled and disintegrate, spotty laughter could be heard throughout the audience. When people began to understand underlying reasons for the casting of “guilty!” votes, they began to feel more at ease as the predictability of the show’s end came into focus.
Directed by Stephen Rhodes, this show is well put together with attention given to the psychology of the panel members. A strong, talented cast coupled with excellent directing has made this very well-done jury room drama a pleasant evening at the Ashtabula Arts Center. Case closed. “12 Angry Men” continues tonight and Saturday evening at 8. Tickets may be reserved by phoning the arts center box office at 440-964-3396.
