ASHTABULA — The South Main Laundromat, formerly the Wash House, has new owners and a desire to clean up Ashtabula city, or at least its laundry.
“Dirty Duds Done Dirt Cheap” is the slogan created by Matt and Cynthia Russell, owners of the Laundromat, located at 5437 S. Main Ave.
Matt Russell is also a co-owner of Russell Upholstery, located across the street.
“Originally, my Dad (Dusty Russell) purchased this building to use for expansion of the upholstery business, but it seemed like there were so many vacant buildings and businesses leaving that we felt we should keep the laundry service to bring people down here to Main Avenue,” Matt Russell said.
“There is no place to do laundry on this side of town, and the laundry business is one business not heavily affected by the economy. People will always need to wash their clothes,” he said.
The South Main Laundromat has 21 Maytag washers, three supersized Maytag front-load washers and eight Maytag super-sized dryers. Soap and soft drink vending machines are also available, as well as folding tables, baskets and tables and chairs for customers, who choose to stay and wait for their clothes to wash and dry.
Some people may not want to, or cannot, do their own laundry, so the South Main Laundromat offers a drop-off wash and fold service, which is priced per pound.
Plans for the near future include expanding into the storefront next door to offer an arcade and food vending machines, as well as free wireless Internet.
“This way, people waiting for their laundry will have a nice place to sit and relax or have some fun. We want to be family-friendly,” Russell said.
“This business is ideal for us. We live close by, and my wife can bring the baby here while she manages the laundromat,” he said.
Hours for the laundromat are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. For further information, call (440) 998-1147.
