JEFFERSON — Diana Brigham grew up in Ashtabula County surrounded by all different types of animals.
“All my life besides dogs, cats and farm animals, we always had unusual animals like pot belly pigs, a fox, pocket pets and pigmy goats,” said Brigham, who is the owner/operator of Paws, Pets and Supplies located at 14 E. Jefferson St.
“I always said someday when I turn 50 I am going to open a pet store. So I decided it was time to take a chance,” she said.
Visitors to the store will have a chance to look at puppies, kittens, birds, guinea pigs, hamsters, rats, mice, ferrets, rabbits, ball pythons, red tailed boas, corn snakes, bearded dragons, water dragons, geckos, green tree frogs, feeder mice, crickets and more.
“We sell everything you could possibly need for the pet you are buying,” Brigham said.
She’s not kidding. The store is stuffed full of supplies, feed, crates, carriers suitable for all types of animals not just dogs, bedding, collars, scoops, housing for the animals, care supplies, novelty items, resource informational pet books and much more.
“For Christmas we are featuring winter apparel for dogs, pet stockings and cute pet toys,” she said.
Pet supply gift baskets are also available for the pet lovers in the family; and if deciding what to put in a basket is a problem, ask for a gift certificate.
Other featured items are Swheat Scoop Natural Wheat Kitty Litter, which is clay and chemical free and septic safe; Evanger’s Dog Food for people who like to cook for their pets but do not have time; and a variety of all natural, low fat, oven baked dog biscuits.
“I try to feature items that are more all natural, because they are just better and safer for pets,” Brigham said.
No need to worry about buying an animal from a “mill” as Brigham will only accept animals from local people she knows.
“I thought Jefferson needed a country pet store. We just want to be a friendly pet supply.”
Brigham has only one steady “employee,” her 4-year-old granddaughter, Savanna.
“My job is to say, ‘thanks for coming and have a nice day,’” Savanna said.
