“My dad and I did gutters, roofs, poured concrete, dug basements, remodeled houses and all kinds of construction together. I learned the trade from him,” Platt said. Platt owns G&R Seamless Gutters, located at 4684 Route 46 S. In 1982, Platt, along with his good friend and former neighbor Gary Babbs, bought a local gutter business, and G&R Seamless Gutters was born. Several years later, Babbs, who specializes in overhead doors, went on to establish his own business. Today, G&R Seamless Gutters provides Ashtabula County homeowners and businesses with seamless gutters and Platt’s leaf-protection system. Platt has two machines (5 inch and 6-inch seamless) that he transports to the job sites, which make the gutters out of aluminum. This way, the gutters are made the length of the roofs and have no seams to impede the water flow. G&R also makes the fascia and soffit systems with more than 45 colors available and hidden hangers. A seamless gutter system is a first line of defense against the damage caused by water run-off. “Without properly working gutters, water can get into your foundation and crack your basement blocks and erode your foundation. Water will also rot your wood siding and can even rot your window frames,” Platt said. Platt’s original leaf cover is superior to anything similar offered on the market today. “Mine is better in quality and in the way it works,” he said. “My leaf covers are made from 0.032-gauge aluminum, so they are thicker, and they have a unique open design. Where the water rolls over the nose, there is an open slot from one end of the gutter to the other.” This design allows the little stuff to get in the gutter to be flushed out with the water, but large things like leaves that clog a gutter, cannot get in. “Competitor leaf gutters are completely closed except for little slots for water. But while they boast ‘nothing gets in,’ all the little stuff collects on top of the cover, plugs it up, and soon it stops working,” Platt said. “I have done a house where the roof was covered with pine needles, but only two little needles (were) all I found in the gutter. I asked the homeowner if he has ever had to flush out my gutter, and he said ‘never.’ My gutter system works because it keeps the big stuff out.” Although Platt may be more expensive than other gutter businesses, the savings are in the longevity of his gutters and the ease of never having to clean them. “You cannot beat me in quality and service. There are guys cheaper, but I don’t do that kind of work, and I don’t carry that kind of material,” he said.
